Fun Pokémon Crystal Hacks

Fun Hack: Shuckleite

Shuckle is already a very defensive Pokémon, but we can make it even more defensive!

In the Player’s Room as soon as you start the game, you will find the SHUCKLEITE - this works exactly the same as the Eviolite in later generations. If your Shuckle holds it, it’ll get a 50% boost to its Defense and Special Defense.

Why? - Why not?!

Inspired by AmityvilleFan on YouTube.

Fun Hack: Wild Safari Zone Encounters

This one’s probably a very buggy mess, but it’s more of a proof of concept than a full-on hack.

Once you get past the Catching Tutorial on Route 29, all your wild encounters become Safari Zone encounters.

This one was fun to code as there’s no Safari Game natively built into Generation II, so I had to build the entire battle engine from scratch. Flee rates are still VERY, VERY janky, but call it a work in progress.

The lack of wild experience points and the chance for Pokémon to flee could make Nuzlocking this one particularly difficult.

Fun Hack: Threedrill

Threedrill is a well-loved side character in the Challenge Run series! Now you get to play as him!

When you go to pick up your Pokémon, you’ll find that you can select all three Poké Balls, and they all contain a Beedrill!

Have fun trying to navigate through Johto and Kanto using just three Beedrill; catching Pokémon is disabled and all HMs have been replaced with items instead.

This’ll prove to be a tricky challenge, but one absolutely worth taking on.

Fun Hack: Umbreoff

It’s Umbreon, but all of its lights have been turned off to save energy.

Only available from Professor Elm’s Laboratory if you change the starters, it has Offensive and Defensive stats swapped around, along with HP and Speed.

It learns Crunch and Howl via level-up, and could actually pose some offensive threat!

FAQs

How do I play the hacks?

You’ll need to download the IPS Patch file for the backport you wish to play, and then patch an unmodified of Pokémon Crystal. This tool can help you patch your game.

Do you take Hack requests?

Generally no. Hacking takes a lot of time and effort, especially with the more complex ideas. Feel free to suggest hack ideas, but there is no guarantee I’ll be able to do them. If there is a specific hack you really want doing, I do take commissions, message me for prices.

How do you hack Pokémon Crystal?

I edit the Pokémon Crystal Disassembly and started by following the add a new Pokémon tutorial. This is a very good place to get started.
